Lake O'Higgins, it's Glacier & O'Higgins

We decided to take the trip up to Lake O'Higgins glacier as we had nothing else to do and felt that we needed to leave Candelario to let them get on with everyday living! We said goodbye and walked slowly down to the jetty to wait for the boat.
Sure enough about 10.50 the boat came round the headland - at least we knew we would able to get to to O'Higgins to catch the bus  the next day.

The local police came down in their only vehicule to pick up supplies.

The bikes were unloaded our bags were put in the hold and off we went.
It was not a very sunny day, peaks disappeared and reappeared. The lake was very rough at times the water splashing up over the top deck! The Glacier is very wide and links into the Southern ice fields.
icebergs are constantly breaking off.
We got very close to the glacier - but it was not so impressive as Perito Moreno!

One of the traditions in these parts is to drink a shot of Whiskey with 1,000 year old glacier water!
So we joined in!
How old are these air bubbles?
Wide horizons.
And a visit to an isolated farm to pick up solar energy engineers.
To encourage people to stay on these farms the government is installing free solar electricity panels
The technicians were to be dropped off at Candelario to install  solar  panels.

We arrived in Villa O'Higgins at 8pm. first stop was the shower!
We hadn't washed for three days!!! Or changed our clothes!
A very small town with very little to photograph,
but our hostel was new and run by Jorge the Spaniard!
 view from the bedroom window.
The next day we were off on a six hour bus drive to Cochrane We were now on the Carreterra Austral proper. Views spectacular, but very difficult to photograph!

We wee very lucky to see a rare Huemul, a type of deer.

Traffic did get in the way!
And we stopped to do deliveries and pick up things!
Old men still live in the wild.
When we arrive at a ferry we were amazed to see a bull being loaded on a boat -

or they were trying to load him.
They gave up and our ferry was able to dock.
A nice cabin, a bar, but no service!

More fantastic scenery.

cattle going home!
Cochrane,a small lively town with fabulous roses.

A good night's sleep and on the bus again the next day to Coyhaique.
